Painting is a way of understanding, observing, and manipulating. At the heart of these compositions are either people or buildings—subjects considered with equal weight and understood as symbiotic to one another. One cannot exist without the other. The building is both a vessel for life and a product of life; the relationship is complex and interwoven.
In observing either, the viewer makes judgements about emotion, and their mood is influenced as a result. Much of this work focuses on finding the unsettling within the familiar. Probing deeper into the subject matter and playing with its qualities creates a deeper connection with the viewer.
This way of thinking, designing, and observing is invaluable when carried into the design process. A strong understanding of colour theory, composition, and subtlety is paramount in framing an inhabitant’s experience.
